About James Drysdale

I Paint to Remind People That Change Is Possible
My work is about seeing new possibilities in the life you already live. I create paintings that act as companions on the journey towards hope, courage, and clarity. My art is for those who feel stuck, as well as those ready to take the next step. After all, transformation isn’t just an idea, but something you can claim.

The Journey
As a young child, I spent hours colouring alongside my grandfather, learning to see the world differently. He taught me to look closer at everything: the greys and browns hidden in red bricks, the dozen shades of green in grass, the way a small white circle makes shoes look shiny. Those lessons planted a seed that would take decades to fully grow.
After a long career that didn't fulfil me, I made a decision that changed everything. I returned to education and discovered I was capable of far more than I’d believed. The confidence I gained opened a new question: what do I actually want? The answer led me back to childhood dreams of being an artist.
I took another leap of faith and enrolled in Milan Art Institute’s Mastery Program, where I developed the skills and vision to become a professional artist. Today, I blend recognisable subjects with expressive colour and symbolic depth to evoke emotion and transformation.

The Work
My paintings explore themes of resilience, growth, and possibility, often drawing on Scotland’s wildlife and natural cycles. From the Celestial Owls collection, featuring Scottish owl species beneath luminous night skies, to commissioned portraits that honour the profound bonds between people and their beloved animals, every piece carries intention.
Working in layers, I begin with acrylics, then use oils to build the richness and luminous quality that brings each painting to life. My studio is in Musselburgh, Scotland, where daily walks along the river with my dog fuel my creative process and keep me connected to the natural world that inspires much of my work.
Having walked through my own journey from darkness into light, I create paintings that serve as proof that transformation is always possible. My mission is simple: to help viewers remember that their story isn’t finished, and their brightest chapters may still be unwritten.
" Transformation isn’t about becoming a different person,
it’s about revealing the one you were always meant to be. "
What Shapes the Work
Connection
I love collaborative projects that bring people together through art. Recently, I created a mural at a local sports centre and invited the community to participate, creating something truly collective. If you’re part of a community group interested in a project, I’d love to hear from you.
Commitment
A portion of profits supports causes aligned with resilience and human potential, delivering meaningful change and using creativity as a force for good.
Intention
Nothing in my work is accidental. I research symbolism carefully and choose subjects for what they represent as much as how they look. Each painting is constructed with meaning in mind, so the visual language carries depth as well as beauty.
